How to make a screen for a wall air conditioner with your own hands?

A reflector screen for an air conditioner is a very useful and in–demand device that slows down a directed stream of cold air and directs it not down, but along the ceiling. This reflector is suitable for air conditioners of all types and sizes (wall, ceiling, floor-ceiling) in any residential, office, industrial, commercial or other premises.

In this article we will tell you how to make a screen for a wall air conditioner on your own. What tools and materials can be used in this case, and what steps does this procedure include?

Preliminary calculations and measurements.

Before self-manufacturing and installing the reflector screen, it is necessary to correctly calculate it’s dimensions. For it’s maximum efficiency, it should be longer and wider than the air conditioner unit by 10-20 centimeters (taking into account the side wings), so that the air stream does not blow it along the edges. No less important are other measurements, for example, the distance from the screen mount to the unit should be at least 20-30 cm. One of the key elements of the deflector are the side walls, which should protrude 5-8 centimeters beyond its limits. These "wings" are of great importance, as they catch the diverging cold air, not allowing it to immediately descend.

Selection of materials and preparation of tools.

To install the screen for the air conditioner on the wall, you will need the following tools: a screwdriver, a construction level, a drill, a meter ruler, a marker /pencil, a knife /scissors, self-tapping screws and a screwdriver. Optionally, you may need a construction hair dryer if you need to warm up plexiglass or acrylic.

For the manufacture of a homemade reflector, such types of materials are most often used as:

• Plastic. The optimal choice is lightweight, durable, flexible and plastic, quickly processed and easily attached.
• Paperboard. It is very easy to process, but much less durable and rigid than plastic, so it can deform over time. It is also the only material that can be attached to a double-sided adhesive tape directly to the air conditioner unit.
• Polycarbonate. According to the basic parameters, it is similar to ordinary plastic, but more durable.
• Acrylic and plexiglass. Varieties of plastic that are also well suited for such purposes. You can pick up sheets of materials of different thicknesses. Before making the screen, acrylic or plexiglass needs to be heated with a construction hair dryer.

Stages of work

• Make a pattern on a sheet of the selected material, taking into account preliminary measurements: note the dimensions of the protective screen and the side wings.
• Cut out the blank with a knife and bend it along the planned lines.
• Attach the screen to the wall and mark the attachment points using the building level.
• Drill holes in the wall with a drill and insert the dowels.
• Screw the product with a screwdriver.
